Accessibility

1. Our Commitment

Fresh Map exists to make good local food easy to find for everyone in the community — and that includes people who use screen readers, keyboard navigation, magnification, or other assistive technology. We are committed to making Fresh Map usable and welcoming for people of all abilities, and we treat accessibility as an ongoing part of how we build the site, not a one-time checkbox.

2. The Standard We Aim For

We work toward the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA as our target. These are the widely recognized guidelines for making web content more accessible. We are describing a goal we actively pursue and measure ourselves against — not a guarantee that every page meets every criterion at all times. Some parts of the site will meet it fully today; others are still a work in progress, and we would rather be honest about that than claim otherwise.

3. What We’re Doing

Steps we take to move toward that goal include:

  • Using semantic, structured HTML so assistive technology can interpret the page
  • Writing meaningful text alternatives for images and icons where they carry information
  • Designing for keyboard navigation, visible focus, and readable color contrast
  • Building the site to work across phones, tablets, and desktops at different zoom levels
  • Checking pages with automated accessibility tools as we ship changes, and fixing issues we find

We deliberately do not use a third-party accessibility “overlay” or plug-in widget. Those tools often do not deliver real accessibility, and we prefer to build it into the site itself.

4. Known Limitations

A few parts of Fresh Map depend on things outside our full control, and may be harder to use with some assistive technology:

  • The interactive map is powered by a third-party mapping library; wherever possible we also provide the same vendor information in a list you can browse without the map
  • Some vendor photos and descriptions come from the businesses themselves or public sources, so their text alternatives and quality can vary

If any of these gets in your way, please tell us — see below. We will do our best to give you the same information another way.

5. Get Help or Report a Problem

If you run into a barrier on Fresh Map, or you need information from the site in a different format, we want to hear about it and help. Email us at hello@freshmap.app with “Accessibility” in the subject line. It helps if you can tell us the page, what you were trying to do, and the browser or assistive technology you were using.

We aim to acknowledge accessibility messages within 5 business days and to work with you toward a fix or an alternative way to get what you need.

6. Ongoing Work

Accessibility is never “finished.” As we add features and vendors, we keep testing and improving, and we update this page as our practices change. Your feedback is one of the most useful ways we learn where to focus next.
